Ghosts

There is nothing quite as frightening as waking up in the middle of the night in 'Top Dorm' (on the third level of Meister Omers RHS of the spiral staircase) and hearing creaking footsteps on that spiral staircase leading to the toilets and washrooms below. You know you're going to burst and be labeled as a 'wet-bed', but YOU ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!

You're petrified The thought of being called a 'wet-bed' is fearful enough, but meeting the resident ghost en route to the toilets was absolutely too frightening to contemplate.

I can hear the cynical among you chortle and grin the grin of the all-knowing, but that's probably in the surrounds of broad daylight. At night, in the pitch of black, with these phenomena and manifestations recorded, it's a different tune.

Even housemaster Pryor experienced an unusual happening with others who verified the occurrence.

Whilst conducting some parents through Meister Omers, they had progressed to the top floor that sported the bathroom. He opened the door, and ushered them in via the passageway, not far from the spiral staircase. In the bathroom were seven baths of the claw-foot pedestal variety. Behind two of the baths at the opposite sides of this room were another two doors.

Originally, one gave access to what was known as 'Top Dorm" on the right and the other to a small senior's study on the left. Both doors were locked and kept permanently shut by the baths blocking their swing-to. The bath plumbing in place also ensured that there was neither access nor egress....and yet.....

As Pryor and guests surveyed the majestic deep white enameled baths, the door on the right rattled, and it appeared that the door handle moved back and forth a number of times. A second or so later a strange cool breeze wafted across the room much to the dismay of all concerned. Next, the door on the left emulated the first's actions and this left the small audience 'mullet-stunned'. No apparition was seen...but something had certainly occurred and this was experienced by all.

There was an awkward silence and the moment seemed an eternity. In silence the group backed out of the room looking quite uncomfortable. This whole episode occurred in broad daylight and there appeared nothing to engender this odd happening.

I heard this "story" first hand from housemaster Richard H. Pryor RAF DFC and bar. Surely he wouldn't lie?
